Secret Message Book with Piano Hinge

Wednesday, February 14th, 2018 6:00-9:00pm

Studio 164, Essex Studios, 2511 Essex Pl, Cincinnati, OH 45206

Would you like to hide a message in your next hand made book? Part accordion book, part pamphlet book, the single piano hinge holding the secret message book together can be opened up to reveal your special missive! Its origins are uncertain, but it never fails to charm and surprise those who discover its mystery. Workshop attendees will make and decorate their own basic model, and learn about a few variations to take it to the next level.

Instructors: Veronica Sorcher, assisted by Jessica Ebert

Veronica Sorcher, a lifelong book and paper addict, has been making handmade books since 2004, and teaching binding techniques to Cincinnati Book Arts Society members and beyond since 2013.

Jessica Ebert has been making books since 2008 and loves making marbled paper, perhaps a little too much.  She is currently infatuated with modified long-stitch bindings, which she makes and sells on Etsy (www.etsy.com/shop/ebertje) and at Essex Art Walks.

Flag Books

Wednesday, January 10, 2018 6:00-9:00pm

Studio 164, Essex Studios, 2511 Essex Pl, Cincinnati, OH 45206

Originally created by renowned book artist Hedi Kyle the flag books adds layers, movement, and a sculptural element to the basic accordion book. You can use the form for everything from greeting cards to visually complex pieces. This gallery from the Book Arts Web shows some great examples of artists exploring this basic structure. In our workshop we will make a bare-bones model of a flag book to understand how it works, and then a more decorative version to explore its visual potential.

December Fun (Explosion Books and Ornaments)

Wednesday, December 13, 2017 6:00-9:00pm

Studio 164, Essex Studios, 2511 Essex Pl, Cincinnati, OH 45206

Join us and learn how to make a simple book that packs a lot of visual punch! Explosion books make great gifts or greeting cards, and we’ll show you an ornament variation too. You’ll have time to make several, and we’ll even teach you how to fold a quick origami box to put them all in! We’ve made this workshop a little cheaper too, as it will be a bit more casual and less structured than other workshops in the series.
