“Make your own Bible. Select and collect all the words and sentences that in all your readings have been to you like the blast of a trumpet.”
The words of Ralph Waldo Emerson sparked the imagination of visiting artist Laurie Doctor who shared that inspiration with eleven CBAS members on April 20 & 21. In her Make Your Own Bible workshop, participants used patterns with marks and intuitive lettering to open a window onto the infinite possibilities of pattern making. Collected phrases from newspapers, poems, stories, songs, even dreams were incorporated as collage elements to accompany each student’s individually created lettering. Large sheets of Arches Text Wove, Rives BFK, Arches Black Cover and a variety of handmade papers were transformed into a finished woven binding.
