MAKING A DRAGON SCALE BOOK – PRESENTED BY MARGUERITE KATCHEN

The Cincinnati Book Arts Society invites you to an in-person and Zoom meeting. Marguerite Katchen will demonstrate how to make a Dragon Scale Book on Saturday, June 8, 2024 from 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm. This will be held at the CBAS Studio #164, 2511 Essex Place, Cincinnati, OH 45206. Parking is available in front of the Essex building and in a lot across the street.

The Dragon Scale binding was popular in China around 650 C.E. The structure allows the viewer to turn individual pages and then roll the pages into a scroll. Some of these books combine panoramic drawings (or in our case, photos) with space for text. A Chinese artist, Zhang Xiaodon, recently managed to re-create this book and since then, there have been more examples which can be found if you search on the internet. This video shows the work of Zhang Xiaodon:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uih0x7-pM3c  If you have a photo, drawing or print that you want to use for your book, bring one that is about 6″ x 10″. Otherwise we will have some calendar photos to use that will work for your prototype.  All of the pages for the book will be cut for you so you can concentrate on making the book rather than on cutting paper.  In addition to a 10″ x 6″ photo or print or drawing, if you have a small glue bottle you prefer to dispense glue from, rather than use a brush with PVA, please bring your bottle. Also if you have a favorite bone folder, bring that although we do have them available. And if you have a score board, bring that as it makes scoring the hinges easier. Otherwise everything will be available in the studio.

Please RSVP by June 1st to [email protected] to reserve a space or be put on the Zoom list. You will receive a confirming email. If you would like to pay the fee of $15.00 by PayPal please use the “June” button on the Study Group page of the CBAS website cincinnatibookarts.org/events-workshops/study-group/  Otherwise, please bring cash or check to the meeting the day of the study group.
