MAKE YOUR OWN BOOKCLOTH

CBAS STUDY GROUP

Make Your own Bookcloth presented by Janice Kagermeier

Saturday, March 9th from 2:00 – about 4:30

Essex Studio #164, 2511 Essex Place Cincinnati, OH and on Zoom

After an introduction to commercial bookcloth (what’s available, differences among the various kinds, and some suppliers) we’ll learn to make bookcloth 2 ways. The fast and easy (but not archival) way uses iron-on fusible adhesive. The traditional Japanese way uses cooked paste, mulberry or similar backing paper and readily available alternatives to ancient Japanese bookmaking tools. Materials for both methods will be provided.

SUPPLIES:

FABRIC: 3 or 4 pieces of fabric large enough to cover the front and back of a book or maybe a box. A quilting fat quarter, 18″ x 22″ would work, but consider the size of the books you usually make. Good quality closely woven cotton or linen work best. No synthetics, knits or wool. Hint: hold your fabric up to the light. If a lot of light comes through, caution – so will the adhesive.

DRYING BOARD: A portable board larger than your fabric for mounting and drying the Japanese method bookcloth. Ideas are Masonite, plywood, Plexiglass, heavy cardboard, book board or foam core. You’ll take the board home with still-wet fabric, so have a towel or something to protect your car.

COVERING: Large piece of plastic (trash bag) to completely cover the drying board.

BRUSH: A wide brush for applying glue.

OPTIONAL: We could use a few more irons and easy-to-transport tabletop ironing boards or ironing pads. Contact [email protected] or [email protected] if you have one to bring.

Please RSVP by March 1st to reserve a space or be put on the Zoom list. If you would like to pay the March fee of $15.00 by PayPal please use the “March” button below. Otherwise please bring cash or check to the meeting the day of the study group.
